Basic Railroad Terminology

Block: a length of track defined by limits

Block Signal: a fixed signal at the entrance of a block

Dispatcher’s Bulletins: current operating instructions that may include restrictive conditions and/or temporary speed restrictions

Main Track: a track (other than an auxiliary track) upon which trains are operated by timetable and/or train order

Siding: an auxiliary track for meeting trains or passing trains

Timetable: the authority for the movement of regular trains, subject to the rules, which may contain classified schedules with special instructions relating to operations
