TUSCALOOSA | Law enforcement agencies will be on the lookout for people not wearing seat belts during the Click It or Ticket campaign held until the end of this month.

The campaign began on Monday. Local police departments and Alabama State Troopers will write tickets to people who are not wearing seat belts.

The nationwide campaign is supported by $8 million of national paid advertising and additional state advertising, said Tasha Washington, assistant director of West Alabama Community Traffic Safety.

During 2007, more than 14,000 people who were not wearing seat belts died in crashes, Washington said. Most of those crashes took place at night, she said.

‘Unless you want to risk a ticket, or worse, your life, please remember to buckle up night and day,’ she said. ‘Don’t forget, Click It or Ticket isn’t just a campaign slogan, it’s a promise.’
