Prince Glover Law Encourages Support for “Locks of Love”
“Locks of Love” is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under the age of 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Locks of Love meets a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. The prostheses Locks of Love provide help to restore children’s self-esteem and confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers. Their mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need.
Here in Tuscaloosa at Arcadia Middle School, we have recently had an example of the great ways Locks of Love can help children that have experienced hair loss due to disease.
After Jackson Leach was diagnosed with leukemia last September and lost his hair after undergoing intensive chemotherapy, a number of his friends and family donated their hair to show their support. Now two months after Jackson’s brothers Sam, 12, and Nick, 10, got their heads shaved, 9-year-old classmate Dylan Martin decided he was finally ready to cut his hair and give it to a good cause. Dylan Martin started growing his hair for Locks of Love after losing his grandfather and four other family members to cancer. Martin has been growing his hair for two years to donate to Locks for Love. He met Leach, who has leukemia, and decided to grow his hair for him.
While Martin was pleased to know his hair was going towards a good cause, Jackson was the one rejoicing. Now entering remission, Jackson is winning his battle against leukemia. He said his treatment has been hard but it’s gotten easier now that it’s tapered off to monthly visits, and his hair is finally starting to grow back. To learn more about Jackson’s story you can visit his blog at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/jacksonleach.
Prince Glover is proud of the sacrifice Dylan Martin made for his fellow classmate! And we continue to wish Jackson the best. Please support Locks for Love in your own community. The organization can be contacted at www.locksoflove.org.
